Saturday – Back in Florence

Yesterday we enjoyed a quiet morning back in Florence.  We didn’t have to be anywhere until a 3pm soccer game that Thomas was playing in.  Thomas’ team ended up getting clobbered by a ridiculously good team 9-0.  This team essentially recruits kids from all over the wider Florence area, and then beats up on all of the other clubs.  They were really amazing to watch – incredible foot skills and perfect passing.  Thomas and his friend Gabriele both played very well, but there just wasn’t much they could do.  Thomas’ team was happy that they didn’t lose 10-0 (double digits)!

After the game we walked to the home of a family on Thomas’ team.  The family is American and they are living in Florence for about 18 months.  They are renting an apartment in what used to be a monastery.  The building is on five acres of land on the outskirts of Florence, and it is only about a 15 minute walk from our place.  Behind the building is a hill that leads to a wonderful view of Florence.  It was late by the time we got there, so we look forward to going again when there is more light.  But this was the first time we saw a view of Florence similar to the one at the top of our blog.  In the picture below, you can see our church (Santo Spirito) on the right.  It is the big yellow building.

Nicholas and Thomas with the great view behind them.  They enjoyed playing in the woods.  We haven’t done that for over a month!

We enjoyed having the chance to walk on the soft ground.  Not that we mind it, but most of Florence is pavement and cobblestones!
